Chapter History

The earliest chapter identity for American Planning Association Planners in Rhode Island was that of the New England Chapter, a joint venture of the Planners from Rhode Island and Massachusetts. The two states primarily shared a newsletter but each state held its own special events and programs. By the early 1990s it was apparent that Rhode Island was ready to be a Chapter on its own. Approval by the National office of the American Planning Association and the members of the Rhode Island Section led to the establishment of the Chapter in 1994.

In the almost 20 years that have followed the APA RI has organized and been involved in an array of activities including:

  • The State Transportation Advisory Committee
  • The State Technical Committee
  • The Annual Southern New England APA Conference with the Massachusetts and Connecticut Chapters
  • Host of the 2002 Region 1 APA Conferences
  • Review of State reports and State Guide Plan elements
  • Governor Almond’s Growth Planning Council
  • Monthly brown bag lunches on relevant planning topics
  • Implementation of AICP Certification Maintenance
  • Publishing of Southern New England Planning Newsletter with the Massachusetts Chapter
  • The annual Lobsterbake on Narragansett Town Beach
  • The annual awards ceremony and holiday party
