Senior Planner- Arlington, MA

Professional and technical work providing broad general assistance on current and long-range planning, operating within the Department of Planning and Community Development; all other related work, as required. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Participates in implementation of town’s long-range plans. Advises the general public and local boards and commissions on compliance with the zoning bylaw and special permit procedures.
Conducts studies and reports, gathers and analyzes land use, housing, economic development and other data, examines alternatives, makes recommendations regarding residential and commercial development.
Provides technical assistance and information to town boards, committees and officials concerning general planning, regulations, and Town policy; serves as a Department liaison to Town Committees as designated by the Director.
Processes, provides technical analysis and reviews of special permit and variance requests considered by the Zoning Board of Appeals, prepares Department memos and reports for the Board, assists with organizing inter-Departmental and Town reviews when needed, and maintains files and tracks cases.
Assists in developing grant applications and administers funding in compliance with laws and regulations.
Updates department and associated committee webpages and provides assistance with social media.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in urban planning or a closely related field required. Master’s Degree in urban planning or a closely related field preferred. Five to seven years of professional planning experience required. A combination of education and experience will be considered.

Knowledge Ability and Skill
Considerable knowledge of planning programs and processes. Knowledge of standard office and planning software.
Strong knowledge of and experience working with zoning laws. Ability to research, prepare and analyze technical reports, including the ability to collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with a range of constituents, including architects, engineers, contractors, developers, property owners, and the general public.

Salary/Pay Rate: $63,306 - 70,698 with potential to $81,914
