Transportation Planner/Data Analyst- CTPS, Boston

The Central Transportation Planning Staff (CTPS) of the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) seeks a transportation planner/data analyst. This individual will lead and support a variety of projects, which could include transit service planning, fare studies, Title VI equity analyses, development of tools and interactive applications, passenger surveys, first- and last-mile transportation studies, and multimodal access studies.

Responsibilities
This position requires strong data analysis skills and the ability to effectively communicate results to both technical and nontechnical audiences. The successful applicant will excel in the following:

Applying strong quantitative analytical skills and critical thinking about analysis methodology and data limitations to draw conclusions from complex datasets
Analyzing large datasets, such as General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS), automatic passenger counter (APC), and US Census data
Working with relational databases, including writing queries, validating data, combining data from multiple sources, and writing associated documentation
Developing tools and interactive applications to explore large datasets
Communicating orally and in writing, including synthesizing complex quantitative and qualitative information into concise, well-organized narratives or graphical displays for both technical and nontechnical audiences
Working both collaboratively and independently with strong personal initiative and working on multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to deadlines 
Managing projects including developing project scopes, budgets, and schedules, and managing other staff members on project teams.

Qualifications
While the following sections describe required and desirable qualifications, CTPS is open to candidates who believe that their particular experience and skills fulfill the requirements. 
 
Required
Proficiency in data analysis and visualization using R and/or Python and an understanding of relational databases
Proficiency processing and visualizing geospatial data using ESRI ArcMap/ArcGIS Pro and/or QGIS software
Project or task management experience, including leading and supervising small teams and developing and maintaining client relationships
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
Demonstrated ability to be open and receptive to new methods, tools, and technology
Proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software
A master’s degree in transportation planning, geography, GIS, or a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field, plus at least three years of experience in a field directly relevant to data analysis; or a Bachelor’s degree in the fields listed above with at least five years of experience in a field directly relevant to data analysis
 
Preferred
One or more years of experience in transportation planning and a strong interest in transit
Knowledge of the Boston region and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA)
Understanding of transportation policy issues
Familiarity with GitHub or other version control platforms
Additional Information
This a full-time position and the starting salary range is $55,300–$88,500 annually, contingent upon qualifications and experience.
